The Grey Viking Thor's Hammer Ring in size 11 is a stainless steel Mjölnir ring - one of the most significant symbols in Norse mythology, worn as a ring in a grey stainless steel finish that won't tarnish, corrode, or fade with daily wear. Size 11 sits between the mid-range and larger end of the ring size spectrum, making it a strong fit for most men's ring or index fingers. The Mjölnir design gives the ring a bold, recognisable face that carries genuine Viking heritage behind it.
Mjölnir - Thor's Hammer and its meaning: Mjölnir is the hammer of Thor, the Norse god of thunder, storms, strength, and the protection of mankind. In Norse mythology, Mjölnir was forged by the dwarven brothers Sindri and Brokkr at Loki's challenge - a weapon so powerful it could level mountains and return to Thor's hand after every throw. The name Mjölnir is most commonly translated as "crusher" or "grinder", reflecting its role as the ultimate weapon of destruction and protection in the Norse pantheon.
Mjölnir was not only a weapon - it was a sacred symbol used in Norse religious practice to hallow marriages, births, and funerals, and to consecrate the dead. Archaeological evidence shows that Mjölnir pendants were worn widely across Scandinavia during the Viking Age, from the 8th to the 11th centuries, as amulets of protection and as statements of devotion to Thor. When Christianity spread through Scandinavia, the Mjölnir pendant was worn alongside and in deliberate contrast to the Christian cross - a statement of Norse identity and religious allegiance. Wearing Mjölnir today carries that same weight of identity and heritage.
Thor - the god behind the hammer: Thor was one of the most widely worshipped gods in the Norse pantheon - the son of Odin and the earth goddess Jörð, the husband of Sif, and the protector of both the gods and humanity against the giants and forces of chaos. Where Odin was the god of kings, warriors, and the elite, Thor was the god of the common people - farmers, sailors, and craftsmen who prayed to him for protection against storms, safe voyages, and good harvests. His hammer was the instrument of that protection, and the Mjölnir symbol was worn by those who sought his strength and guardianship.
Key Features:
- Stainless steel construction - tarnish-free, fade-free, corrosion-resistant
- Mjölnir (Thor's Hammer) design as the ring face
- Grey stainless steel finish - suits the Norse aesthetic and aged metal quality
- Size 11 (US sizing - internal diameter approx. 20.6mm)
- Suitable for daily wear including exposure to water
- No maintenance required - stainless steel holds its finish without polishing
Mjölnir as a ring - the format choice: The Mjölnir symbol has been worn as a pendant since the Viking Age, but as a ring it takes on a different quality - it's on the hand, visible in every gesture, present in every handshake. For a symbol associated with strength, protection, and the power to consecrate and hallow, wearing it on the hand rather than at the chest gives it a more active, present quality. A Mjölnir ring is the format for someone who wants the symbol where it can be seen and felt, not hidden under a jacket.
Stainless steel - the practical choice for a ring worn daily: A ring is the piece of jewellery most exposed to daily wear - on the hand through washing, riding, working, and general use. Stainless steel doesn't tarnish like silver, doesn't corrode like brass, and doesn't wear through to a base metal like plated alternatives. The grey finish suits the Mjölnir design - the same tonal quality as the iron and stone of the Viking Age, and the weathered metal aesthetic that Norse-inspired jewellery belongs in.
Size 11 - sizing guidance: Size 11 in US ring sizing corresponds to an internal diameter of approximately 20.6mm and a circumference of approximately 64.7mm. This is a larger mid-range size that suits many men's ring fingers and index fingers. If you are between sizes, size up for a ring with a substantial face to ensure it sits flat rather than rotating. To measure your size, wrap a strip of paper around your finger, mark where it overlaps, and measure the length - compare to the circumference above.
Mjölnir in motorcycle culture: Thor's Hammer has been a fixture of biker jewellery and culture for decades - the hammer as a symbol of strength, protection on the road, and the Norse warrior spirit that motorcycle culture draws from. For riders who wear Norse symbols, Mjölnir is the most protective of them - the hammer that Thor used to guard humanity against the forces of chaos, worn as a statement that the rider carries that same protective energy with them on every ride.
